Italy
Naples is Italy raw and real — pizza where it was invented, a castle over the bay, and Pompeii an hour away.

Naples is Italy at its most intense — a loud, ancient, chaotic, beautiful city of pizza, castles, and a bay with Vesuvius smoking behind.
It's the gateway to Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri, but the city itself rewards two days: the historic center (a UNESCO sprawl), the National Archaeological Museum, and pizza eaten where it was invented. It's gritty where Rome is polished — that's the point.
It's safe in the tourist areas (mind pickpockets and the traffic), and it's one of the best food cities in the country. Go in spring or fall; summer is hot and crowded.

Budget
€70–130 per person per day at mid-range. Cheaper than Rome or Florence.

Warm and less crowded than summer. Summer is hot and packed with day-trippers to Pompeii and the coast.
Spring (Apr–Jun)
Warm, green, and before peak — our top pick.
Fall (Sep–Oct)
Pleasant and quieter; good for Pompeii and the coast.
Summer (Jul–Aug)
Hot, crowded, and at peak prices. The city itself thins out in August.
Where you stay shapes the trip. Here's how to think about it.
