Italy
A 7-day trip to Naples
Naples is Italy raw and real — pizza where it was invented, a castle over the bay, and Pompeii an hour away.
Naples is Italy at its most intense — a loud, ancient, chaotic, beautiful city of pizza, castles, and a bay with Vesuvius smoking behind.
It's the gateway to Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri, but the city itself rewards two days: the historic center (a UNESCO sprawl), the National Archaeological Museum, and pizza eaten where it was invented. It's gritty where Rome is polished — that's the point.
It's safe in the tourist areas (mind pickpockets and the traffic), and it's one of the best food cities in the country. Go in spring or fall; summer is hot and crowded.

How to plan 7 days in Naples
- Eat pizza where it was invented — Da Michele, Sorbillo, or Di Matteo (cash only at many).
- Do Pompeii and the smaller Herculaneum in one day — both by the Circumvesuviana train.
- Take the funicular up to Vomero for the view and the cleaner air.
- Visit the National Archaeological Museum for the Pompeii mosaics and the Farnese collection.
- Naples is the base for the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Ischia — stay here and day-trip.
