Perched on a rocky promontory in the Golfo dei Poeti just south of Lerici, Tellaro offers the pastel facades, cliffside pathways, and sea-spray romance of the Cinque Terre without the cruise ship throngs or souvenir train. It is intentionally cut off from the rail line, preserving an unhurried, local rhythm anchored around a tiny harbor, narrow caruggi, and rugged swimming coves.

Build your own trip with these prebuilt itineraries

Each one is a tested, day-by-day plan for Tellaro, Italy — start here, then make it yours.

Go to Tellaro if you crave the classic drama of the Ligurian coast but refuse to fight shoulder-to-shoulder crowds on narrow village steps. It provides direct access to coastal hiking trails, sheltered swimming off smooth sea rocks, and understated waterfront trattorias where dinner is defined by whatever the morning boats brought in.

Where to stay

Stay inside the historic center (Borgo Antico) if you want stone lanes, church bells, and zero vehicle noise right outside your window—provided you can carry your luggage down steep stone stairways. Choose the Fiascherino area just north of town if you prefer immediate beach cove access, on-site hotel parking, and open panoramic views across the Gulf of Poets.

Getting there

Take the train to La Spezia Centrale. From La Spezia, board the local ATC bus (Line S or L) to Lerici, then transfer to the smaller local shuttle bus directly down to Tellaro (roughly 45–60 minutes total). Alternatively, drive via the A12 autostrada (exit Sarzana or La Spezia) toward Lerici, following the narrow coastal road to Tellaro's small public parking area above town.

Getting around

Tellaro is strictly pedestrian inside the historic core; everything within the village is walked in under 10 minutes, though it involves steep stairs and uneven stone cobbles. To travel between Tellaro, Fiascherino, and Lerici, use the local ATC shuttle bus or hike the coastal footpaths. Do not attempt to drive within the village center.

Food & drink

Prioritize hyper-local Ligurian seafood and olive oil. Essential dishes include polpo all'inferno (stewed octopus with chili and tomato, referencing Tellaro's local octopus legend), trofie or testaroli tossed with fresh Genovese basil pesto, and acciughe salate (salted local anchovies). Pair with chilled Colli di Luni DOC Vermentino from nearby hillside vineyards.

What it costs

Moderate: significantly cheaper than Portofino and 20–30% less inflated than central Monterosso or Vernazza, though high season boutique lodging carries a premium due to limited bed capacity.
1Wander the narrow caruggi down to Chiesa di San Giorgio, the 16th-century pink-walled church sitting right over the crashing waves.
2Sunbathe on the flat sea rocks of the old harbor or swim off the sheltered pebble shores of Spiaggia di Fiascherino.
3Hike the ancient terraced trail up through olive groves to the abandoned hill hamlet of Barbazzano.
4Take the scenic footpath along the cliffs into Lerici for an afternoon exploring Castello San Terenzo and the harbor promenade.
5Sip an early evening Aperol Spritz or local white at Bar La Marina while watching fishing skiffs tie up.

Skip it if

Skip Tellaro if you have mobility challenges (the village is an obstacle course of steps and slopes), if you demand vibrant nightlife, or if your primary objective is fast rail hopping through all five Cinque Terre towns in a 48-hour window.

Destination intelligence

Updated 9/13/2026

The structured record we plan every Tellaro, Italy itinerary from.

Walkability

High inside the village for able-bodied travelers, but exclusively via stairs and cobbles; entirely pedestrianized with zero internal car access.

Transit quality

Moderate: reliable local buses connect regularly to Lerici and La Spezia, but there is no direct train station.

Car needed

Not strictly required if using the Lerici shuttle bus, but a small car is useful for exploring the wider Montemarcello promontory—provided your lodging includes parking.

Ideal duration

2 to 3 days

Minimum useful

Half day (as an excursion from Lerici or La Spezia)

Peak season

July and August (warmest water and lively outdoor dining, but limited parking and high boutique hotel demand)

Shoulder season

May to June and September to early October (ideal hiking temperatures, clear seas, fewer crowds, and open trattorias)

Low season

November through March (damp weather, rough seas, and extensive winter closures among local bars and guesthouses)

Best for

SoloGood for quiet retreats, reading, hiking, and photography; less suitable for solo travelers seeking a social hostel environment.
CouplesExceptional: intimate waterfront spots, quiet alleys, and dramatic coastal sunsets make it one of the most romantic bases in Liguria.
FamiliesFair to poor: manageable with older kids who can hike, but difficult with toddlers or strollers due to continuous staircases and open sea drop-offs.
GroupsFair: great for renting a small private coastal villa, but limited large group lodging and dining capacity in the village center.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing heavy roller luggage: the village is accessible only via long flights of stone stairs from the drop-off area.
  • Driving directly into town expecting easy parking during July or August, when the tiny paid lot fills before 9:00 AM.
  • Expecting sandy resort beaches: Tellaro's swimming is off rocky slabs, concrete boat ramps, or steep pebble coves.
  • Treating it as a rapid base for Cinque Terre day trips: without a direct train station, getting to Riomaggiore requires a bus transfer through Lerici or La Spezia.

Best nearby

Lerici (10 minutes by bus or a 45-minute coastal hike)Portovenere (accessible by ferry from Lerici across the gulf)Montemarcello (picturesque hilltop village 15 minutes inland by trail or road)Cinque Terre (accessible by train from La Spezia, 30 minutes away)
