Delhi is rarely loved at first breath, but it rewards patience and boundary-setting faster than almost any mega-city on earth. Built across layers of eight successive capitals, it sprawls from the dense Mughal labyrinth of Old Delhi to the quiet, tree-canopied avenues designed by Edwin Lutyens and the design boutiques of South Delhi. It is loud, unapologetically sensory, and logistically demanding, but beneath the diesel fumes and street bustle sits an astonishing wealth of preserved tombs, vibrant faith institutions, and a culinary heritage spanning centuries of royal and migrant traditions.

How long

4 days

Go for the architectural density and living history. Few cities allow you to compare a 12th-century minaret (Qutub Minar), a 16th-century Mughal precursor to the Taj Mahal (Humayun's Tomb), and an active community kitchen serving tens of thousands daily (Gurudwara Bangla Sahib) in a single afternoon. Delhi's food scene—from Old Delhi's kebab alleys to South Delhi's modern pan-Indian dining—is unmatched on the subcontinent.

Where to stay

Stay in South Delhi or the Lutyens' Bungalow Zone. Base yourself in Defence Colony, Greater Kailash, or leafy Chanakyapuri for quiet nights, green parks, and walkable local markets. Avoid staying in Paharganj or directly next to the New Delhi Railway Station unless you are on a shoestring budget and willing to trade tranquility and clean air for rock-bottom rates.

Getting there

Arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), located roughly 16 kilometers southwest of central Delhi. The Airport Express Metro line runs directly from Terminal 3 to New Delhi Railway Station in under 25 minutes. If arriving by rail, New Delhi, Old Delhi, and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations link Delhi to the rest of India; always pre-book taxis via app or use the official prepaid booth to avoid touts.

Getting around

Use the Delhi Metro for long-distance north-south transit; it is cheap, air-conditioned, punctual, and eliminates gridlock traffic. For the last mile between metro stations and your destination, use app-based auto-rickshaws or ride-hailing services like Uber and Ola. Never attempt self-driving or renting a car to pilot yourself.

Food & drink

Prioritize Mughlai specialties, street snacks, and regional hubs. Eat nihari and seekh kebabs in the lanes behind Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, chole bhature near Connaught Place or Karol Bagh, and regional Indian dishes at Dilli Haat INA's state food stalls. For modern Indian dining, book ahead at Indian Accent in The Lodhi.

What it costs

Moderate. Delhi offers extreme value for local dining, metro travel, and midrange guesthouses, but luxury five-star hotels and fine dining are priced at international metropolitan levels.
1Explore Humayun's Tomb and the restored Sunder Nursery heritage park early in the morning before crowds arrive.
2Walk through Old Delhi starting at Jama Masjid, weaving through the spice stalls of Khari Baoli via cycle rickshaw.
3Sit quietly in the morning mist or jog along the 15th-century Sayyid and Lodi dynastic tombs in Lodhi Garden.
4Observe the evening prayers and massive communal langar kitchen at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib.
5Admire early Indo-Islamic stonework and the 4th-century iron pillar at the Qutub Minar complex in Mehrauli.

Skip it if

Travelers with severe respiratory vulnerabilities or asthma should avoid Delhi from late October to January due to heavy winter smog. Anyone looking for a calm, pedestrian-only, leisurely wander without sensory overstimulation should bypass Delhi and fly directly into smaller cultural hubs like Udaipur or Kochi.

Destination intelligence

Updated 9/13/2026

The structured record we plan every Delhi itinerary from.

Walkability

Low. While self-contained neighborhoods like Lodhi Colony, Khan Market, and Sundar Nagar are pedestrian-friendly, wide arterial roads, heavy traffic, and broken sidewalks make cross-city walking impossible.

Transit quality

High. The Delhi Metro is world-class, safe, reliable, and clean, featuring dedicated women's carriages and extensive coverage across the National Capital Region.

Car needed

None. Do not rent a car to drive yourself. Use the Delhi Metro for arterial runs, Uber/Ola for air-conditioned door-to-door trips, and auto-rickshaws for short hops.

Ideal duration

4 days

Minimum useful

2 days

Peak season

October to March. Cool, pleasant daytime temperatures make monument exploring comfortable, though November to January sees heavy particulate smog.

Shoulder season

April and September. April brings sharp daytime heat, while September transitions out of the monsoon with lingering humidity and occasional rainfall.

Low season

May to August. Sweltering, dry summer heat reaching over 40°C (104°F) in May and June gives way to torrential monsoon rains and humidity in July and August.

Best for

SoloModerate. Solo travelers must be assertive, practice situational awareness, use app-based transit over street negotiations after dark, and consider local guided tours in congested areas like Old Delhi.
CouplesHigh. South Delhi's heritage boutique hotels, romantic walks in Lodhi Garden and Sunder Nursery, and world-class dining offer a rich shared cultural experience.
FamiliesModerate. Navigating stroller-unfriendly streets and extreme crowds requires patience, though large open heritage parks (Sunder Nursery, Lodhi Garden, National Crafts Museum) provide great family spaces.
GroupsHigh. Hiring private vans or moving via app-based cabs is affordable, and Delhi's banquet-style dining culture caters naturally to large groups sharing meals.

Common mistakes

  • Treating Delhi purely as a transit sprint for the Golden Triangle and spending only 12 jet-lagged hours in a car.
  • Believing touts outside the New Delhi Railway Station or Red Fort who claim ticket offices or sites are closed.
  • Trying to walk long distances across arterial roads instead of using the Metro and auto-rickshaws.
  • Visiting in late November through December without checking air quality index (AQI) levels and preparing N95 masks.
