AlUla is Saudi Arabia’s archaeological jewel and flagship heritage project, centered around the sandstone canyon landscapes of the Hijaz. Anchored by the Nabataean rock-cut necropolis of Hegra, ancient Dadanite capitals, and the reflective architecture of the Maraya, it functions as a highly curated open-air museum where ancient crossroads culture meets cutting-edge desert luxury.

How long

4 days

Hegra rivals Petra in Nabataean architectural ambition, but its dry climate preserves tomb inscriptions and ornamental pediments in sharper detail, without aggressive hawkers or crowded trailheads. Beyond Hegra, you are surrounded by dramatic sandstone inselbergs, thousand-year-old mudbrick settlements, and avant-garde desert pavilions built directly into secluded side canyons.

Where to stay

Stay in Ashar Valley if your priority is total architectural immersion, luxury wellness resorts, and canyon solitude. Choose AlUla Town or near the Old Town if you prefer walkable dining in the evening, closer proximity to tour hubs at Winter Park, and lower accommodation rates.

Getting there

Fly directly into AlUla International Airport (ULH) from Riyadh, Jeddah, or Dubai via Saudia or flynas. Alternatively, take the Haramain high-speed rail to Madinah, rent a car, and drive roughly 3.5 to 4 hours north along paved desert highways.

Getting around

Renting a car at the airport is strongly recommended. Sights are scattered across 40 kilometers of rugged terrain, and rideshares are inconsistent outside the central town. Ashar Valley resorts provide internal shuttles or electric buggies, but transit between valleys is steep, with private drivers costing upwards of $100 per hour.

Food & drink

Prioritize farm-to-table dining inside the palm oases featuring regional citrus, dates, and fragrant rice dishes like kabsa and saleeg. Reserve Joontos at Dar Tantora for traditional Saudi breakfasts, and book Somewhere in the Oasis for Levantine-Mediterranean sharing plates beneath the palm canopy.

What it costs

High to ultra-luxury. Expect upscale resort pricing with few backpacker amenities.
1Tour Hegra's monumental tombs (including the Tomb of Lihyan son of Kuza) via electric Land Rover or vintage coach.
2Photograph the mirror reflections of Ashar Valley at the Maraya concert hall.
3Wander the mudbrick ruins and evening souq of AlUla Old Town.
4Stroll beneath the date palms along the shaded AlUla Oasis Trail.
5Watch the sunset change sandstone hues at Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil).
6Inspect the ancient Dadanite cliff tombs and Jabal Ikmah's 'open-air library' of Lihyanite inscriptions.

Skip it if

Skip AlUla if you are traveling on a shoestring backpacker budget, expect walkability between major sights, or want an energetic nightlife scene. Alcohol is prohibited, budget transit is limited, and site access is tightly regulated.

Destination intelligence

Updated 9/13/2026

The structured record we plan every AlUla & the Northwest Desert itinerary from.

Walkability

Low. Sights are separated by expansive desert terrain; walkability is strictly contained within designated pedestrian precincts like Old Town and the Oasis Trail.

Transit quality

Limited. Public bus networks operate primarily during winter festival periods with sparse schedules; independent car rental is strongly advised.

Car needed

Yes. Outside of guided day packages from Winter Park, an independent rental car is essential for affordable, flexible movement across the valley.

Ideal duration

4 days

Minimum useful

2 days

Peak season

November to March: mild daytime highs around 22–27°C, cool desert nights, and active festival schedules (Winter at Tantora).

Shoulder season

April and October: warm desert days, cooler evenings, thinner crowds, and lower lodging tariffs.

Low season

May to September: extreme desert heat frequently exceeding 40°C, limited daytime outdoor access, and temporary seasonal venue closures.

Best for

SoloModerate. Very safe and welcoming, but car rental or driver costs are substantial without companions to share the expense.
CouplesExceptional. Dramatic canyon scenery, world-class resort spas, and private open-air dining under dark desert skies.
FamiliesModerate. Great for older kids interested in history, stargazing, and outdoor desert adventure; less suited for strollers and toddlers in rugged terrain.
GroupsHigh. Shared costs for private transport and villas make group logistics efficient and cost-effective across large archaeological sites.

Common mistakes

  • Showing up at Hegra without booking an official time slot weeks in advance through Experience AlUla.
  • Visiting between late May and September, when daily temperatures routinely top 42°C (108°F) and midday sightseeing halts.
  • Relying on Uber to pick you up in remote canyons like Ashar Valley or Jabal Ikmah.
  • Packing only lightweight summer clothes for winter trips, ignoring brisk desert nights that sink below 10°C (50°F).
  • Treating AlUla as a rapid half-day detour from Madinah instead of dedicating at least three full days.
