A 7-day trip to Xi'an
Imperial Silk Road terminus of underground armies, massive fortifications, and street-side hand-pulled noodles.
Xi'an served as the capital for thirteen Chinese dynasties, anchoring the ancient Silk Road at the height of the Tang and Han empires. Today, modern high-rises surround an intact 14-kilometer Ming-era defensive wall, while the world-famous Terracotta Army rests in nearby Lintong. It is a city best understood through its distinct spatial layers: the dense Muslim Quarter (Huifang) inside the fortifications, the Tang-era pagodas and museums along the southern cultural corridor, and archaeological digs on its eastern periphery.

What your 7-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 7 days in Xi'an
- Book your Terracotta Army morning slot first (aim for the 8:30 AM opening gate) to finish Pit 1 before tour buses arrive from downtown at 10:30 AM.
- Cycle the 14-kilometer City Wall starting around 4:30 PM from Yongning Gate (South Gate) to catch late afternoon light and watch the watchtowers illuminate at dusk.
- Pair your trip with Beijing or Chengdu via high-speed rail: Xi'an North Station is only 4 to 4.5 hours from Beijing West and 3.5 to 4 hours from Chengdu East.
- Skip the chaotic, overpriced main souvenir lane of Huimin Street in the Muslim Quarter; duck instead into Sajinqiao or Dapiyuan alley for authentic hand-pulled noodles and lamb skewers.
- Do not attempt the Terracotta Army and Mount Huashan on the same day; Huashan demands an independent full-day trek starting via high-speed train to Huashan North.
