Nakasendo Trail & Kiso Valley

Japan

A 10-day trip to Nakasendo Trail & Kiso Valley

Edo-era post towns, cedar mountain passes, and slow travel through rural history

The Nakasendo was one of the five major highways developed during the Edo period to link Kyoto with Tokyo (then Edo). Its most scenic, preserved stretch runs through Nagano and Gifu prefectures in the Kiso Valley. Travelers navigate mossy cobblestone footpaths, forested mountain passes, and preserved timber post towns free of overhead telephone wires and neon signage.

How to plan 10 days in Nakasendo Trail & Kiso Valley

  • Book accommodations with dinner and breakfast included; historic post towns have zero evening restaurants or convenience stores.
  • Forward primary rolling luggage from Tokyo or Kyoto to your next major city hotel, taking only a 20-30L backpack into the Kiso Valley.
  • Hike south-to-north from Magome to Tsumago rather than the reverse; it eliminates roughly 100 meters of uphill elevation gain.
  • Pair your Kiso Valley walking route with Matsumoto to tour its original 16th-century wooden castle, reachable in 45 minutes by limited express from Shiojiri.
  • Don't attempt both the Torii Pass (Narai to Yabuhara) and the Magome-Tsumago pass on the same day unless you are an endurance hiker utilizing limited express train connections.
