A 2-day trip to Lyon
Lyon is France's gastronomic capital — Renaissance alleys, river confluences, and bouchons that are the real France.
Lyon is where two rivers meet and French food was perfected — Renaissance traboule alleys in Vieux Lyon, a Roman amphitheater, and the bouchons (traditional bistros) of the Presqu'île. It's Paris-quality without Paris prices or Paris crowds; eat a salade lyonnaise and walk up Fourvière.

What your 2-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 2 days in Lyon
- Stay on the Presqu'île (around Cordeliers or Bellecour) if you want a flat, central base where you can walk to both rivers, Vieux Lyon, and the main dining strips without relying on evening taxis.
- Do not climb the Fourvière hill on foot first thing in the morning; take the Saint-Just or Fourvière funicular up with a regular metro ticket, tour the basilica and Roman ruins, and walk down through the Jardins du Rosaire into Vieux Lyon.
- Pair Lyon with Burgundy (Beaune/Dijon) or the Northern Rhône wine valley; Lyon Part-Dieu connects directly to both via regional TER trains in under an hour.
- Reserve your authentic bouchon lunches and dinners at least 10 to 14 days ahead, and verify they carry the 'Authentique Bouchon Lyonnais' label to dodge the postcard-menu tourist traps concentrated along Rue Saint-Jean.
- Save Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse for an early lunchtime visit (around 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM) on a weekday or Saturday; by mid-afternoon many raw seafood counters and cheese purveyors pack down, and Mondays are mostly shuttered.
