A 4-day trip to Dali, Yunnan, China
A breezy plateau sanctuary between the Cangshan ridge and the alpine shores of Erhai Lake.
Pitched on a high plateau at 2,000 meters altitude between the dramatic 4,000-meter peaks of the Cangshan range and the vast expanse of Erhai Lake, Dali was historically the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms. Today, it serves as China’s favorite bohemian escape. While parts of Dali Old Town are thoroughly commercialized, leaving the central cobblestone axes reveals centuries-old Bai minority courtyard architecture, breezy cycling paths along Erhai's ecological corridor, mountain hiking trails above cloudlines, and a thriving artisan cafe and market culture.

What your 4-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 4 days in Dali, Yunnan, China
- Stay in Xizhou for at least one night instead of treating it as a midday day trip; you get the morning market and empty courtyard alleys before tourist buses pull in at 10:30 AM.
- Do not try to cycle the entire 120-kilometer loop around Erhai Lake in a single day; focus on the paved, car-free 20-kilometer western corridor between Caicun and Xizhou.
- Pair Dali with Shaxi Ancient Town (2 hours north by car) rather than rushing straight to Lijiang if you prefer well-preserved Tea Horse Road history and quiet cobblestone squares.
- Book Cangshan cable car rides (especially the Zhonghe or Xima Pond routes) for the earliest morning slot to avoid midday mountain cloud-cover and tour-bus queues.
- Take the high-speed bullet train from Kunming (roughly 2 hours); skip regional flights into Dali Airport, which are frequently prone to weather delays and long security lines.
