Day 1
Imperial Monuments and the Heart of Timur's Capital
Old Town, Gur-e-Amir Complex
Starting here after a slow breakfast lets you view Timur's ribbed azure dome and jade cenotaph in relative quiet before bus tours arrive from Tashkent trains.
Registan, Registan Square
Visiting late morning allows you to explore the three madrasahs (Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, Tilya-Kori) while interior museum rooms and courtyards are open.
Dagbitskaya, Dagbitskaya Area
Samarkand plov is distinct: layered yellow carrots, beef, chickpeas, and quail eggs cooked without stirring. Must arrive by 1:15 PM before the giant cauldrons are depleted.
Chorsu, Islam Karimov Promenade
Timur's colossal congregational mosque stands directly next to the active Siab Bazaar, letting you take in monumental 15th-century scale before browsing halva and dry fruits.
Russian Quarter, Russian Quarter
One of Samarkand's most comfortable sit-down dining rooms, offering refined Uzbek and European dishes, local wine, and a quiet leafy courtyard away from tour bus crowds.
Registan, Registan Viewing Platform
The square is illuminated by floodlights after dark, highlighting the azure tile patterns against the night sky in stark contrast to the daylight view.
Day 2
Sacred Necropolises, Ancient Silk Road Foundations & Modern Heritage
Afrosiyob, Afrosiyob Hillside
This avenue of 11th- to 15th-century mausoleums displays the finest, richest blue tilework and carved terracotta in Central Asia. Mid-morning light penetrates the narrow alleyway beautifully.
Ulugh Beg, Northeast Outskirts
Built in the 1420s by Timur's astronomer grandson, the subterranean curved trench of the giant sextant demonstrates the scientific pinnacle of the Timurid Renaissance.
Old Town, Near Bibi-Khanym
A shaded outdoor courtyard with traditional tapchan seating serving fresh manti (steamed meat dumplings), lagman noodles, and green tea with lemon.
Afrosiyob, Afrosiyob Mound
Houses the world-famous 7th-century Sogdian Hall of the Ambassadors wall frescoes, offering concrete visual evidence of pre-Mongol Silk Road diplomacy.
Russian Quarter, Gagarin Street Corridor
Renowned for its charcoal-grilled lamb and beef shashlik, baked flatbreads, and crisp local draft beers. It sits on the edge of the 19th-century quarter with an energetic, local crowd.
