Day 1
The Jerusalem of the Highlands & Monolithic Marvels
Northern Complex, Central Lalibela
Starting mid-morning lets you bypass the 7am tour crowds while exploring Bete Medhane Alem (the largest monolithic rock church in the world) and Bete Maryam at an unhurried, comfortable pace.
Central Lalibela, Near Northern Gate
Set beneath massive olive and eucalyptus trees, this is Lalibela's oldest hospitality garden, serving authentic doro wat and fresh shiro alongside cold local St. George beer.
Western Isolated Outlier, Southwest of Northern Cluster
Carved downwards into the rock in the shape of a Greek cross, Bete Giyorgis is best experienced in the late afternoon when the warm amber light illuminates the roof relief and shadows fill the carved trench.
Northern Escarpment, North Hilltop Escarpment
Futuristic spiral architecture perched high over the Lasta valley escarpment. It serves inventive Ethiopian-Scottish fusion alongside classic injera platters with sunset views.
Day 2
Subterranean Tunnels, Ancient Fortresses & Honey Wine
Southeastern Complex, Southeastern Complex
This fortress-like complex features Bete Amanuel's refined Aksumite stepped architecture and the pitch-black 50-meter subterranean tunnel symbolizing Hell to Heaven.
Town Center, Central Town
Kana is celebrated for its warm hospitality, serving freshly roasted Ethiopian coffee ceremonies and rich tibs (sautéed spiced beef) cooked over clay charcoal braziers.
Southeastern Quarter, Southeastern Fringe
Bete Merkorios features partially collapsed cave walls and ancient fabric paintings. Afterwards, explore the stone craft workshops along the trail where sculptors carve miniature Lalibela crosses.
Town Center, Central Lalibela
An unpretentious cultural institution where locals and travelers gather to drink cloudy fermented honey wine (tej) served in round-bottomed glass flasks (berele) to the sound of live masenqo musicians and eskista shoulder dancing.
Day 3
Monastic Cave Architecture & Panoramic Valley Ridges
Outskirts / Lasta Mountains, Mount Abuna Yosef Foothills
Predating the Lalibela rock churches by 80 years, this Aksumite church of alternating dark wood beams and white limestone is built inside a basalt cave lined with ancient juniper trees. It reveals the architectural ancestor of Lalibela's monoliths without the crowds.
Northern Heights, Valley Lookout / Town Periphery
On returning along the mountain route, stop at the ridge lodge for fresh injera, roasted barley (kolo), and lentil stews overlooking the Tekezé River basin.
Southeastern Complex, Southeastern Escarpment
Bete Abba Libanos is carved directly into a sheer cliff face with its roof and floor still attached to the living rock. Follow it with an unhurried, ceremonial roasting of frankincense and green coffee beans at a local homestead overlooking the valley.
Town Center, Town Center
A cozy, family-run spot serving authentic Lalibela tibs, vegetarian beyaynetu platters, and local draught beer in an intimate traditional mud-and-stone rondavel interior.
