The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system — 2,300km of living coral and 1,500 fish species, visible by snorkel, dive, or glass-bottom boat from Cairns and Port Douglas.

Cairns is the backpacker-and-basecamp hub; Port Douglas is the upmarket alternative an hour north. A day trip on a reef boat gets you out to the outer reef — the diving and snorkeling standard. Add the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest rainforest on Earth, for the full 'where the reef meets the rainforest' trip.

Go in the dry season (May–October) for clear water and pleasant weather; the wet (November–April) brings stingers and cyclone risk. Wear a stinger suit if swimming in summer.

How long

3–5 days

Best time

May–October (dry season)

When to go

Clear water, pleasant weather, and no stingers. The wet (Nov–Apr) brings jellyfish and cyclone risk — you'll need a stinger suit.

Dry (May–Oct)

The best reef visibility and weather. Peak season.

Shoulder (Nov–Dec)

Warm and cheap; stinger suits needed.

Wet (Jan–Apr)

Hot, wet, and cyclone risk. Cheap but the reef can be murky.

Neighborhoods

Where you stay shapes the trip. Here's how to think about it.

Cairns

Base, budget, first-timers

The basecamp and backpacker hub — the gateway airport, reef trips, and the lagoon pool (no beach in town).

Don't miss: A full-day reef trip to the outer reef (Michaelmas Cay or the Agincourt ribbon).

Port Douglas

Couples, upmarket

The upmarket alternative an hour north — a beach town, the marina, and closer to the outer reef.

Don't miss: The Low Isles and a dinner on the Port Douglas marina.

The Outer Reef (day trips)

Everyone

The reef itself — a 90-minute boat out, then snorkel and dive on the coral.

Don't miss: A snorkel on the Agincourt or ribbon reefs — the clearest coral.

Daintree Rainforest (day trip)

Nature

The oldest rainforest on Earth, north of the Daintree River — a crocodile cruise and a walk in the canopy.

Don't miss: A Daintree River crocodile cruise and the Marrdja boardwalk.

Kuranda & the Skyrail (day trip)

Families, easy day

The rainforest village and the gondola over the canopy from Cairns.

Don't miss: The Skyrail gondola over the rainforest canopy.

Getting around

Fly into Cairns. Reef trips and tours get you out; a rental car helps for the rainforest and Port Douglas.

Safety

Very safe. The risks are the sun, the stingers (Nov–Apr — wear a suit), the crocs (don't swim in estuarine rivers), and the jellyfish.

Budget range

A$180–350 per person per day at mid-range. Reef trips ($200–400) are the main cost.

How to plan it

  • Take a full-day outer-reef trip — the inner reef is damaged; the outer is the real thing.
  • Go in the dry season (May–Oct) for clear water and no stingers.
  • Add the Daintree Rainforest — the reef-rainforest combo is the Far North's signature.
  • Book reef trips with a PADI-certified operator if you want to dive.
  • Swim in the stinger nets or wear a suit in the wet season (Nov–Apr).

Questions

How many days for the Great Barrier Reef?

Three to five. Three for Cairns and a reef day; five adds the Daintree and Port Douglas.

Cairns or Port Douglas?

Cairns for budget and basecamp; Port Douglas for upmarket and closer to the outer reef. Many do both.

When's the best time to visit the reef?

May–October, the dry season — clear water, no stingers, pleasant weather.

Is the reef still worth seeing?

Yes — the outer reef is healthy and spectacular. Some inner sites are damaged; go to the outer ribbon reefs.
