Connecting Mossel Bay to the Storms River Mouth along the N2, and curling inland through the Outeniqua and Swartberg mountains into the semi-arid Klein Karoo, this corridor is South Africa's premier road trip. It strips away the logistical friction of safari expeditions, replacing it with pristine tarmac, coastal lagoon towns, dramatic mountain gorges, and marine sanctuaries.

How long

7 to 10 days

Few routes on earth compress this much ecological diversity into a 300-kilometer drive. Within two hours, you transition from temperate coastal rainforests dropping into wild Indian Ocean surf to red sandstone cliffs, ostrich estates, and dramatic arid mountain passes like the Swartberg. It is the gold standard for independent, flexible driving in Southern Africa with world-class farm-to-table dining, accessible hiking, and malaria-free wildlife viewing.

Where to stay

Anchor in two or three strategic bases rather than switching hotels every night. Spend 3 to 4 nights in Plettenberg Bay or Wilderness for coastal activities, hiking, and ocean views, paired with 1 to 2 nights in Oudtshoorn to experience the Klein Karoo's arid dramatic interior and mountain passes.

Getting there

Most travelers fly into Cape Town International (CPT), rent a car, and drive east along the N2 or scenic Route 62. To avoid backtracking 500 kilometers back to Cape Town, do a one-way self-drive ending at Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and fly back to Cape Town or Johannesburg. Alternatively, regional flights land directly at George Airport (GRJ) right in the center of the route.

Getting around

A rental car is non-negotiable. Public transit between towns is practically non-existent, and points of interest—like national park gates, hiking trailheads, and vineyard estates—are spaced 15 to 45 minutes apart by highway. A standard sedan works for the coastal N2, but a vehicle with decent ground clearance (compact SUV) is strongly recommended if you tackle gravel mountain passes like the Swartberg.

Food & drink

The route marries sea-harvested coastal fare with rich inland Karoo pastoral heritage. Along the coast, prioritize wild Knysna lagoon oysters, freshly caught hake and kingklip, and local craft beers. Once through the Outeniqua Mountains into the Klein Karoo, pivot strictly to tender Karoo lamb chops, slow-braised venison potjie, ostrich fillet paired with local Klein Karoo port-style wines, and biltong from small-town butcheries.

What it costs

Mid-range: $120-$240 USD per day for two people (covering car rental, comfortable 4-star boutique guesthouses, park conservation fees, and excellent sit-down dinners with wine). Luxury estates and top-tier safari lodges range from $350-$800+ USD per night.
1Hike the full Witzand or Point trail loop around Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay above seal colonies and crashing surf.
2Cross the suspension bridges over the Storms River Mouth in Tsitsikamma National Park and kayak up into the gorge.
3Drive the engineering marvel of the unpaved Swartberg Pass between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, returning via the Meiringspoort water gap.
4Canoe the Touw River into indigenous forest and hike to the waterfall boardwalks in Wilderness National Park.
5Take an early morning wild meerkat conservation walk in the arid scrub outside Oudtshoorn.
6Explore the deep dripstone caverns of the Cango Caves via the Heritage or Adventure route.

Skip it if

Skip this region if your South Africa trip is under 8 days and your priority is Big Five safari in Kruger or deep cultural immersion in Cape Town. It is also unsuitable for travelers who strongly dislike driving, as navigating car rentals and winding highway distances is central to the experience.

Destination intelligence

Updated 9/13/2026

The structured record we plan every Garden Route & Klein Karoo itinerary from.

Walkability

Car-dependent overall. Individual town centers like Knysna Waterfront or central Oudtshoorn are walkable, but attractions, beaches, and trailheads require driving.

Transit quality

Poor. There is virtually no reliable public rail or bus network between attractions; private vehicle rental is essential.

Car needed

Yes. A rental car is mandatory for practical travel, scenic exploration, and reaching national park trailheads.

Ideal duration

7 to 10 days

Minimum useful

4 days

Peak season

Mid-December to January (Summer school holidays; warm ocean waters, very heavy domestic crowds, packed beaches, and peak lodging rates).

Shoulder season

February to April and October to November (Ideal weather, warm sunny days, lower crowds, excellent hiking conditions, and blooming fynbos).

Low season

May to August (Southern Hemisphere winter; cooler temperatures, rougher seas, and more coastal rain, though excellent for land-based whale watching along coastal cliffs).

Best for

SoloHigh. Very safe and straightforward for solo road-trippers, with numerous reputable guesthouses, social surf lodges, and easy navigation.
CouplesHigh. Outstanding boutique coastal cliff hotels, intimate Karoo retreats, private wine estates, and scenic oceanfront dining.
FamiliesHigh. Calm tidal lagoons, canopy adventures, malaria-free wildlife reserves, and self-catering homes make it one of South Africa's best family road trips.
GroupsHigh. Abundant multi-room coastal villas, shared adventure sports, and straightforward multi-vehicle or minivan touring.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the Garden Route as a high-speed dash between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth with 1-night stops at every town, spending half the vacation unpacking suitcases.
  • Skipping the Klein Karoo and Route 62, missing the dramatic contrast of the Swartberg Pass and semi-desert landscape.
  • Driving the coastal roads after dark, where unlit stretches, wildlife, and occasional pedestrian traffic make night driving stressful and hazardous.
  • Assuming Tsitsikamma hikes are casual strolls; rocky trails require proper hiking boots, sun protection, and plenty of water.
