How to plan 10 days in Garden Route & Klein Karoo
- Stay in Plettenberg Bay or Wilderness if you want direct ocean and trailhead access; pick Knysna only if you prioritize evening lagoon dining without driving.
- Split your trip into two distinct geographic bases: 4 nights on the lush coast (Wilderness or Plett) and 2 to 3 nights inland in the arid Klein Karoo (Oudtshoorn or Calitzdorp).
- Don't attempt to drive from Cape Town all the way to Tsitsikamma in one day; stop overnight in the Swellendam foothills or Oudtshoorn to explore Route 62.
- Book your Cango Caves heritage or adventure tour and Tsitsikamma kayak permits online at least two weeks in advance during summer and Easter periods.
- Cross between the coast and the Karoo via the dramatic Swartberg and Outeniqua passes to experience the sudden shift from dense indigenous rainforest to red desert scrub.
