A 10-day trip to Zermatt, Switzerland
Car-free high-alpine drama under the pyramid of the Matterhorn
Zermatt is an alpine village set directly beneath the 4,478-meter pyramid of the Matterhorn in the southern Valais canton. Fully pedestrianized and navigated solely by foot, electric carts, and mountain railways, the town balances rustic timber chalets with high-altitude skiing, legendary fondue stüblis, and rugged hiking terrain.
Trip length
10 days
Best time to go
Mid-January to early March for winter skiing; mid-July to late September for open high-alpine hiking passes.
What your 10-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 10 days in Zermatt, Switzerland
- Dedicate one clear morning to Gornergrat by boarding before 8:30 AM to catch the Matterhorn reflection at Riffelsee before mountain breezes distort the water.
- Do not attempt both the 5-Lakes Trail (Sunnegga) and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise on the same day; each mountain sector deserves its own unhurried morning.
- If skiing across the border into Cervinia, Italy, buy the international pass upgrade early, monitor the high-altitude winds, and start heading back to Switzerland before 2:00 PM to avoid being stranded.
- Book slope-side lunch tables at Chez Vrony or Findlerhof in Findeln at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead if traveling during peak winter or summer seasons.
- Skip staying down in Täsch just to save money on lodging; you will lose the village evening atmosphere and spend unnecessary hours coordinating shuttle trains.
