A 5-day trip to Vientiane, Laos

A slow-cadence riverfront capital defined by French café culture, quiet Theravada wats, and an unhurried urban pace.

Vientiane is easily Southeast Asia’s sleepiest capital, eschewing the skyscraper density and frantic scooter swarms of Bangkok or Hanoi for wide boulevards, crumbling French colonial villas, and riverside beer gardens. Straddling the muddy curve of the Mekong River right across from Thailand, it functions more like an oversized provincial market town than a geopolitical power center. Travelers who arrive expecting grand metropolitan thrills will be disappointed, but those who lean into its leisurely rhythm will find a world-class café scene, exceptional herbaceous cuisine, and deeply solemn Buddhist monuments.

How to plan 5 days in Vientiane, Laos

  • Base yourself in Ban Mixay or Ban Haysoke if you want step-out access to bakeries, coffee roasters, and riverfront evening walks.
  • Pair Vientiane with Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang using the high-speed Laos-China Railway (LCR), which cuts formerly brutal mountain road trips down to under two hours.
  • Do not try to visit Buddha Park and Pha That Luang on the same afternoon; traffic and heat will drain your energy. Tackle That Luang in the morning cool and head to Buddha Park after lunch.
  • Book Laos-China Railway tickets at least 2 to 3 days in advance through the official LCR app or your hotel concierge, as trains regularly sell out.
  • Dedicate at least 90 minutes to the COPE Visitor Centre rather than rushing it between temples; it delivers essential historical context on Laos that reframes the rest of your trip.
