A 5-day trip to Turin

Royal Savoy arcades, museum masterpieces, and the birthplace of aperitivo—without the tourist swarms.

As Italy's first modern capital and the ancestral seat of the House of Savoy, Turin feels dramatically different from Rome, Florence, or Venice. Marked by neoclassical boulevards, 18 kilometers of covered porticoes, grand Baroque piazzas, and a dramatic backdrop of the western Alps, it blends Parisian grandeur with gritty northern Italian ingenuity. It is the birthplace of Italian cinema, Fiat, espresso culture, vermouth aperitifs, and gianduja chocolate, yet it remains primarily inhabited by locals rather than tour bus crowds.

How to plan 5 days in Turin

  • Base yourself in Centro near Piazza San Carlo or Quadrilatero Romano if you want to walk everywhere without touching public transit.
  • Pair Turin directly with 3 to 4 days exploring the Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards in the Langhe, accessible via a 1-hour train to Asti or Alba.
  • Do not try to visit both the Museo Egizio and the Royal Palace on the same morning; museum fatigue will derail your afternoon.
  • Reserve the panoramic glass elevator to the top of Mole Antonelliana 2 weeks out to guarantee your timed ticket for sunset.
  • Dedicate a full half-day to the Venaria Reale palace; factoring in the 40-minute 'Venaria Express' shuttle bus each way, it cannot be rushed in two hours.
