A 5-day trip to Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Basalt cliffs, glacial crowns, and desolate lava fields condensed into a single coastal loop.
Protruding into the North Atlantic just two hours northwest of Reykjavík, Snæfellsnes is often dubbed 'Iceland in Miniature' for its concentration of dramatic terrain. Within a 90-kilometer strip of land, you encounter the ice-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano, windswept black pebble beaches, stark black timber churches, and sea-battered basalt arches. While commercial tour buses blast through it in a bruising 11-hour day sprint from the capital, the peninsula only reveals its true character when you stay overnight, timing your coastal walks around tide and light rather than tour schedules.
Trip length
5 days
Best time to go
Mid-May to early June or late September for maximum open roads, workable daylight, and vastly reduced coach traffic.
What your 5-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 5 days in Snæfellsnes Peninsula
- Base yourself in Stykkishólmur if you want dinner variety, historic harbor charm, and easy ferry access to the Westfjords; pick Arnarstapi if your priority is walking right out of your door onto wild coastal cliff trails.
- Never attempt the interior mountain cut-throughs (like the F570 under the glacier) in a standard 2WD or in marginal weather; stick strictly to the paved coastal ring of Route 54 and Route 574.
- Pair Snæfellsnes with the Westfjords via the Baldur car ferry from Stykkishólmur across Breiðafjörður to Brjánslækur instead of backtracking through Borgarnes to the Ring Road.
- Reverse the tourist tide: visit Kirkjufell after 18:00 when the Reykjavík tour coaches depart, and hit the black pebble coves of Djúpalónssandur before 09:30.
- Skip the crowded, steep climb behind Kirkjufellsfoss if winds are gusting over 15 m/s; the spray turns the narrow clay paths into dangerous slick mud.
