A 7-day trip to Plitvice Lakes
Sixteen stepped travertine basins, cascading falls, and raw karst landscape.
Plitvice Lakes National Park comprises sixteen stepped, mineral-rich lakes tethered by rushing travertine dams, subterranean caves, and moss-lined boardwalks. Situated midway between Zagreb and the Dalmatian coastline, it serves as Croatia's geological crown jewel, where natural karst dynamics constantly rebuild the waterfalls in real time.

Best time to go
May to early June and late September to mid-October provide the optimal balance.
What your 7-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 7 days in Plitvice Lakes
- Book an entry ticket for 07:00 or 08:00 at Entrance 1, hike the Lower Lakes to Veliki Slap in silence, then ride the electric boat across Lake Kozjak before lines exceed 45 minutes.
- Choose Program C (8 km, 4–5 hours) starting at Entrance 1 if you have one full day; it combines Lower and Upper Lakes using the park shuttle train and boat to eliminate redundant backtrack hiking.
- Pair your visit with an overnight stop in Rastoke (Slunj) to see working 18th-century watermills and break up the transit between Zagreb and Zadar.
- Avoid scheduling your hike between 11:30 and 14:30 from June through August; retreat to your lodge for lunch and return in the late afternoon when day-tour buses clear out.
- Pack a personal daypack with water and trail lunch; park concession food is limited to mediocre burgers and overpriced cafeteria sandwiches at P3 boat stop and Entrance 2.
