A 10-day trip to Oʻahu (Honolulu)
Oʻahu is Honolulu and so much more — Waikiki's beach, Pearl Harbor, and a wild north shore.
Oʻahu is Hawaii's gathering place — Waikiki's beach and hotels, Pearl Harbor's history, and the North Shore's big waves and laid-back surf towns. Rent a car and get out of Waikiki to find the real island.
Trip length
10 days
Best time to go
Mid-April to early June, or September through October.
What your 10-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 10 days in Oʻahu (Honolulu)
- Stay in Waikīkī if you want to walk to dinner and cocktails; base in Kailua or the North Shore only if your priority is quiet mornings and you do not mind driving 45 minutes for nightlife.
- Group your North Shore sights into a single dedicated day trip: leave Honolulu by 7:30 AM to beat two-lane traffic on Kamehameha Highway, stopping at Haleʻiwa, Waimea Bay, and the shrimp trucks in Kahuku.
- Do not try to pair Pearl Harbor and a full North Shore loop on the same day; historical museum exhaustion and cross-island highway traffic will spoil both experiences.
- Book your Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve snorkeling tickets at exactly 7:00 AM HST two days prior to your intended visit, or you will be turned away at the gate.
- Pair a morning hike up the Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail with lunch and swimming at Kailua Beach Park to make efficient use of the Windward coastline route.
