A 10-day trip to Nairobi

Nairobi is the safari capital — a national park inside the city, and the gateway to the Masai Mara.

Nairobi is East Africa's hub — the only city with a national park inside its limits (lions, rhinos, 7km from downtown), the Giraffe Centre, and the gateway to the Masai Mara. Eat nyama choma, see the elephant orphanage, and use it as the start of a Kenya safari. Best June–October for the migration.

What your 10-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 10 days in Nairobi

  • Base yourself in Karen if your priority is wildlife sanctuaries and quiet, or stay in Westlands if you want evening dining and nightlife on your doorstep.
  • Schedule your Nairobi National Park game drive at gate-opening time (6:00 AM) to catch lions and black rhinos active against the sunrise skyline before midday heat sets in.
  • Group your Karen stops—Giraffe Centre, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and Karen Blixen Museum—on the same day to avoid losing two hours crossing the city gridlock.
  • Never schedule a tight international flight connection out of Jomo Kenyatta (JKIA) right after landing at Wilson Airport (WIL); traffic between the two can turn into a 90-minute crawl.
