North Macedonia
A 4-day trip to Lake Ohrid
Byzantine clifftop churches, crystal tectonic waters, and Ottoman cobblestones on Europe's oldest lake.
Perched on the border of North Macedonia and Albania, Lake Ohrid is a dual UNESCO World Heritage site known for its extraordinary clarity, ancient endemic ecology, and deep Orthodox Byzantine roots. The Old Town rises along a steep hillside of whitewashed Ottoman houses and medieval basilicas above turquoise waters, offering an unhurried, budget-friendly lakeside stay that pairs cultural exploration with relaxed swimming.

How to plan 4 days in Lake Ohrid
- Stay down on Kej Marshal Tito or near the Old Bazaar if traveling with bulky luggage or strollers; choose Varosh only if you can carry your bags up steep stone stairways.
- Take an early morning boat to the Monastery of Saint Naum to paddle the crystal springs before the tour buses cross the border from Albania.
- Do not miss the wooden footbridge hanging off the cliffs between Kaneo and the Church of St. Sophia for Ohrid's finest evening walk.
- Pair your visit with an overland transit stop: direct intercity buses run daily between Ohrid, Skopje (3–3.5 hours), and Tirana, Albania (3 hours).
- Combine Tsar Samuel's Fortress, the Hellenistic Antique Theatre, and the Plaošnik mosaic complex into a single mid-morning loop before the midday heat.
