Lake Como

A 10-day trip to Lake Como

Grand alpine-lake villas, terraced gardens, and efficient mid-lake ferries.

Lake Como is an inverted Y-shaped subalpine glacial lake where sheer Prealps drop directly into deep water, flanked by neo-classical palazzi and botanical promontories. It functions best not as a road-trip route, but as an aquatic transit network centered on the mid-lake triangle of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio. Travelers who understand its geography rely on passenger ferries and trains rather than cars to explore terraced villas, lakeside promenades, and traditional Lombard crotti.

What your 10-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 10 days in Lake Como

  • Base yourself in Varenna if arriving by train from Milan Centrale, avoiding the slow ferry transfer with heavy luggage on day one.
  • Never schedule Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello on the same afternoon; give each estate its own morning so you are not sprinting between boat connections.
  • Always check the return ferry schedule before dinner; passenger service between western and eastern shores drops off sharply after 8:30 PM outside peak July/August schedules.
  • Book an early morning morning slot (9:00 AM) for Villa del Balbianello to photograph the terraced promontory before tour boats swamp the dock.
  • If caught in peak summer ferry queues, walk to the car ferry slipway instead; pedestrian tickets are honored on car ferries, which run more frequently across the central triangle.
