Kefalonia

Greece

A 5-day trip to Kefalonia

Dramatic limestone coastline, sapphire underground lakes, and mountain-framed Ionian fishing villages.

The largest of the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia pairs soaring limestone cliffs and pine-carpeted peaks with clear azure coves. Slower and more geographically diverse than Corfu or Zakynthos, it caters to road-trippers who value rugged mountain driving, unhurried waterfront tavernas, and world-class pebble beaches over organized resort nightlife.

June or September offer peak beach weather without the gridlocked mountain roads of midsummer.

What your 5-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 5 days in Kefalonia

  • Base yourself around Sami or Agia Effimia if your priority is central driving access to both northern coves and southern sights.
  • Do not attempt to see Myrtos Beach, Assos, and Fiskardo in a single rushed afternoon; the narrow cliffside roads and limited parking require patience and slow pacing.
  • Take the 20-minute local car ferry between Argostoli and Lixouri instead of driving the 40-kilometer land route around the Gulf of Argostoli.
  • Reserve boat taxis from Zola Harbor at least a day ahead if you want access to Fteri Beach without undertaking the steep 45-minute scrubland hike.
  • Dedicate one clear afternoon to driving up Mount Ainos National Park to see the endemic black firs and wild horses before descending into the Omala Valley for Robola wine tastings.
