A 3-day trip to Johannesburg

Johannesburg is South Africa's engine — gold, Apartheid's history, and a city of energy and caution.

Johannesburg (Joburg) is South Africa's biggest city and economic engine — built on gold, scarred by Apartheid, and today a city of energy, art, and trees. The Apartheid Museum and Soweto are essential; use it as the gateway to Kruger and Cape Town. It's not a walking city — use Uber and take local advice on safety.

What your 3-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 3 days in Johannesburg

  • Base yourself in Rosebank if you want to hop directly off the Gautrain airport train into a pedestrian-friendly pocket with sidewalk dining.
  • Do not pair Soweto and the Apartheid Museum into a single rushed afternoon; both carry immense emotional weight and require at least 3 hours each to absorb properly.
  • Pre-book a local guide for Soweto or downtown walking tours at least 1 to 2 weeks ahead, especially during the October–February safari and summer high season.
  • Schedule your flight layover to spend at least 48 hours here instead of rushing straight to Kruger—South Africa's modern socio-political landscape makes far more sense after seeing Joburg.
  • Always hail an Uber when leaving a restaurant or venue after dark, even if your hotel or guesthouse is only two blocks away down an unlit suburban street.
