A 10-day trip to Ihlara Valley & Central Cappadocia
Ditch the group bus caravan for shaded canyon trails, monastic caves, and subterranean multi-level citadels.
Located roughly 75 kilometers southwest of Göreme, the Ihlara Valley and the southern Cappadocia corridor represent Anatolia at its most elemental. While the central valleys around Göreme are defined by arid fairy chimneys and sunrise balloon launches, Ihlara is a lush 14-kilometer volcanic canyon carved by the Melendiz River, flanked by vertical cliffs hiding dozens of Byzantine frescoed cave churches. Paired with the engineering marvels of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities, this sub-region is the ultimate counterweight to mainstream Cappadocia crowds. Visiting independently lets you bypass rushed tour bus schedules to walk the shaded riverbed, drink çay over floating wooden platforms in Belisırma, and explore Selime Monastery on your own terms.

What your 10-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 10 days in Ihlara Valley & Central Cappadocia
- Arrive at Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı right at 08:00 AM opening to clear the narrow tunnels before tour bus caravans cause claustrophobic bottlenecks.
- If hiking the canyon point-to-point, park at Belisırma or Selime, take a local taxi up to the main Ihlara gate, and walk downstream back to your vehicle at your own pace.
- Don't try to hike the entire 14-kilometer canyon in high summer; stick to the shaded 4-kilometer segment from the main ticket gate down to the floating lunch pontoons in Belisırma.
- Stay in Güzelyurt instead of Göreme if you want restored Greek stone mansions, empty village squares, and zero commercial balloon tourism.
- Wear footwear with deep rubber lugs; damp canyon stones near the Melendiz River and polished tufa ramps inside Selime Monastery are notoriously slick.
