A 5-day trip to Huasteca Potosina
Turquoise canyon rivers, jungle surrealism, and Mexico's rawest road trip.
Stretching across the lush eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, Huasteca Potosina is a dramatic landscape of neon-blue mineral rivers, thundering waterfalls, and humid subtropical rainforest. Long a sanctuary for domestic road-trippers and adventure seekers, it remains refreshingly free of mass international tourism, largely due to its logistical friction. The reward for tackling winding mountain corridors is unmatched: swimming into river caverns, descending the fantastical stairways of Las Pozas in Xilitla, and paddling wooden pangas beneath the 105-meter Cascada de Tamul.

How to plan 5 days in Huasteca Potosina
- Split your lodging between Ciudad Valles (central waterfall access) and Xilitla (cloud forest surrealism and southern caves) instead of doing long, grueling daily round-trips.
- Arrive at the Tanchachín or La Morena boat launches for Cascada de Tamul before 8:30 AM to secure a wooden panga before the 10:00 AM domestic tour groups jam the narrow river canyon.
- Book an afternoon time slot for Puente de Dios so sunlight penetrates the narrow limestone cavern ceiling, illuminating the mineral-blue pool below.
- Do not pair Sótano de las Golondrinas and Las Pozas on the same day unless you are comfortable waking up at 4:30 AM to catch the sunrise bird exodus at the abyss.
- Pack heavy-tread neoprene water shoes and a waterproof dry bag; every single river site requires clambering across slick, wet limestone and swimming in mandatory rental life jackets.
