A 7-day trip to Flores
Volcanic ridges, prehistoric dragons, and the rugged gateway to Komodo
Flores is a long, serpent-shaped island spanning from the boomtown harbor of Labuan Bajo in the west to volcanic caldera peaks and quiet Catholic outposts in the east. Most travelers land solely to launch a liveaboard through Komodo National Park, but overland Flores reveals a raw, inland Indonesia that modern tourism has barely altered: cone-shaped Ngada megalithic villages, tri-color crater lakes, and steep mountain passes through primary forest.

How to plan 7 days in Flores
- Book a one-way overland transit: fly into Labuan Bajo (LBJ) and out of Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF) to avoid wasting three days retracing mountain switchbacks.
- Do not attempt to drive from Labuan Bajo to Bajawa in a single day; split the transit with an overnight in Ruteng to break up seven hours of winding alpine passes.
- Schedule your Gunung Kelimutu crater lake climb for dawn, as thick volcanic fog and heavy cloud cover typically roll in and obscure the lake colors by 9:00 AM.
- Reserve your Komodo liveaboard before booking your domestic flights, as boat departure dates run on rigid weekly schedules (often Friday–Sunday or Monday–Wednesday).
- Bring substantial cash (Indonesian Rupiah) from Labuan Bajo ATMs before heading east, as bank machines in Ruteng, Bajawa, and Moni regularly run dry or reject foreign cards.
