A 7-day trip to Detroit
Industrial grit meets world-class design, iconic music history, and singular architectural wealth.
Detroit defies easy stereotypes. The historic powerhouse of American industrial might has evolved into a captivating urban landscape defined by soaring Art Deco towers, grassroots arts movements, foundational musical history, and one of the country's most compelling culinary scenes. Rather than a polished, sterile tourist hub, Detroit offers a raw, authentic energy where century-old market traditions sit alongside cutting-edge adaptive reuse projects.
Trip length
7 days
Best time to go
Late May through June, or September through October.
What your 7-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 7 days in Detroit
- Anchor in Downtown or Midtown along Woodward Avenue if you want to rely on the streetcar and avoid daily rental car parking fees.
- Book Motown Museum timed entry slots online at least two to three weeks ahead; do not expect same-day walk-up tickets.
- Save Eastern Market for Saturday morning, and connect directly from there to the Riverfront via the paved, mural-lined Dequindre Cut Greenway.
- Do not cram the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village into a half-day; Dearborn requires a full 5 to 7 hours of dedicated floor and transit time.
- Take the free People Mover elevated loop through Downtown for architectural vistas and rapid transit between the Financial District, Huntington Place, and Broadway.
