A 3-day trip to Chiang Rai
Modern visionary temples, misty mountain tea hills, and slow northern Lanna living.
Chiang Rai is often wrongly reduced to a rushed day trip from Chiang Mai. In reality, Thailand's northernmost province offers an expansive, slow-paced landscape of visionary art architecture, cool-climate tea estates, and deep Lanna cultural roots without the heavy digital-nomad congestion of its southern neighbor.

How to plan 3 days in Chiang Rai
- Base yourself near the Clock Tower if you want walkable street food and night markets without needing late-night transit.
- Split your stay: spend 2 nights along the Mae Kok River for temple sights, then move 1 night up to Doi Mae Salong for highland tea culture.
- Arrive at Wat Rong Khun right when gates open at 08:00; by 10:30, day-trip coaches from Chiang Mai fill the footbridge.
- Never try to combine Phu Chi Fa sunrise, the Golden Triangle, and the White Temple in a single day—distances between them take 2 to 3 hours of mountain driving each way.
- Reserve VIP seats on the Chiang Mai-to-Chiang Rai Green Bus 5 to 7 days ahead if traveling over a weekend.
