A 5-day trip to Chefchaouen

A mountain-ringed, cobalt-hued medina built for quiet walks and Rif mountain air

Perched on the slopes of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen trades the sensory overdrive of Fez and Marrakech for cool mountain air, indigo-washed alleyways, and an easy Andalusian-Riffian rhythm. Known for its strikingly uniform shades of blue lime-wash, it is essentially a pedestrian sanctuary where days are spent navigating steep stairwells, drinking spiced mint tea, and hiking surrounding crests.

What your 5-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 5 days in Chefchaouen

  • Base yourself near Bab el-Ain or Place Outa el Hammam if you want direct, flat luggage access without hauling bags up 150 vertical stone steps.
  • Pair Chefchaouen with Tangier (2.5 hours by grand taxi) or Fez (4 hours by CTM bus); never attempt it as an exhausting 8-hour round-trip day excursion from Casablanca.
  • Do not try to do the Akchour Waterfalls and God's Bridge hike on the same afternoon you arrive; book a dedicated morning grand taxi to beat the midday river heat and muddy trail traffic.
  • Time your walk up to the Spanish Mosque for 45 minutes before sunset, bringing a flashlight or fully charged phone for the unlit, rocky descent.
