A 3-day trip to Chapada Diamantina, Bahia
Prehistoric table-top mesas, subterranean blue sinkholes, and Brazil's premier wilderness trekking.
Covering over 150,000 hectares of interior Bahia, Chapada Diamantina National Park is an immense plateau carved by diamond-rush history, colossal canyon walls, and subterranean rivers. Anchored by the 19th-century colonial outpost of Lençóis, it offers a stark counterweight to coastal Brazil, drawing serious multi-day trekkers to the off-grid Vale do Pati, cave swimmers to Poço Azul, and landscape purists to the windswept summit of Morro do Pai Inácio.

How to plan 3 days in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia
- Base yourself in Lençóis for the first 3 days for caves and western viewpoints, then move south to Mucugê or Ibicoara rather than attempting a grueling 8-hour round-trip day transfer to Cachoeira do Buracão.
- Do not book your departure flight from Salvador on the same day you exit the Vale do Pati trek; mud, washed-out dirt roads, or vehicle punctures on the trail exit can easily cause a 4-hour delay.
- Pair your visit with Salvador by taking the comfortable 6-hour direct executive bus (Real Expresso or Rápido Federal) from Salvador’s rodoviária to Lençóis, saving the cost and stress of city car rentals.
- Book your Vale do Pati homestay permits and guide at least 4 to 6 weeks ahead if traveling during Brazilian holidays (Carnival, July, New Year's), as homestay capacity inside the valley is strictly capped.
- Visit Morro do Pai Inácio strictly between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM for sunset, but arrive at the ranger control booth before 5:00 PM when trail entry officially shuts.
