A 2-day trip to Bilbao
Bilbao is the Basque industrial city reborn by a Guggenheim — old and new in one rebuilt river town.
Bilbao is the post-industrial Basque city reinvented by the Guggenheim — Gehry's titanium museum on the river, an old town of pintxos, and a regenerated waterfront. It's grittier and grander than San Sebastián; do both. Eat pintxos, see the Guggenheim, and ride the metro to the coast.
Trip length

Best time to go
May to June and September to October for warm days, thinner crowds, and prime pintxo season.
What your 2-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.

How to plan 2 days in Bilbao
- Base yourself in Abando if you want quiet nights and five-minute walks to the Guggenheim; base in Casco Viejo if you want to stumble straight home from pintxo crawls.
- Do not try to rush San Sebastián as a mere lunch stop; allocate at least two full days to Bilbao first before taking the ALSA or Lurraldebus eastward.
- Book your Guggenheim Bilbao admission for mid-morning, then spend the afternoon taking Metro Line 1 out to Portugalete to see the UNESCO-listed Bizkaia Transporter Bridge.
- Pair Bilbao with a weekend in the Rioja Alavesa wine region if you have four or more days, picking up a rental car only as you leave the city center.
