A 10-day trip to Auckland
Auckland is a city of two harbors — sailboats, volcanoes, and a ferry to islands.
Auckland is a thin, watery city between two harbors — sailboats, dormant volcanoes, and ferries to islands (Waiheke). It's a calm, livable base for wider New Zealand.

What your 10-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 10 days in Auckland
- Stay in Britomart or Viaduct Harbour if you want to walk straight from your hotel onto island ferries and downtown dining.
- Dedicate one entire weather-cleared day to Waiheke Island rather than trying to cram it into an afternoon.
- Climb Mount Eden (Maungawhau) in the late afternoon for 360-degree views of both the Waitematā and Manukau harbours before heading to dinner on Ponsonby Road.
- Do not rent a car while staying downtown; parking rates run steep and downtown traffic is frustrating. Pick up wheels only when setting off for your North Island road trip.
- Pair Auckland with a drive to the Coromandel Peninsula or the geothermal hubs of Rotorua and Taupō.
