How to plan 4 days in Alishan, Chiayi County

  • Book your Alishan Recreation Area hotel room 60 to 90 days ahead; aging hotels in the tourist village sell out every weekend regardless of quality.
  • Split your stay: one night inside the park at the summit for sunrise, one night at a Shizhuo tea farm B&B for rural scenery.
  • Buy your Zhushan sunrise train ticket at Alishan Station between 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM the day before, or prepare for an exhausting 90-minute uphill hike in the dark.
  • Walk an extra 10 minutes past the overcrowded Chushan viewing platform to the 360-degree wooden deck at Ogasawara Mountain for fewer heads in your view.
  • Skip the afternoon bus rush out of the park by departing either on the early 9:10 AM shuttle or lingering past 3:30 PM once large tour groups clear out.
