A 5-day trip to Acadia National Park

Granite peaks plunging into cold North Atlantic surf along historic carriage roads

Covering more than 47,000 acres primarily on Maine's Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park pairs dramatic boreal sea cliffs with inland glacial lakes and historic motor-free stone carriage roads. It is a compact, highly tactile park where exposed coastal scrambles sit minutes from quiet fishing harbors and roadside lobster pounds.

Trip length

5 days

Best time to go

September through early October for optimal hiking weather and peak autumn color without midsummer gridlock.

What your 5-day plan includes

  • A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
  • Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
  • Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
  • Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.

How to plan 5 days in Acadia National Park

  • Base yourself in Bar Harbor if you want walk-to-dinner dining and car-free shuttle access; choose Southwest Harbor if you prefer authentic lobster boats and peaceful evenings.
  • Do not drive to Jordan Pond or Sand Beach between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in July or August—catch the Island Explorer bus or secure trailheads before 8:00 a.m.
  • Snag a Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation for sunrise or sunset via Recreation.gov exactly 90 days or 2 days prior to your target day at 10:00 a.m. ET.
  • Pair Acadia with a day trip to the Schoodic Peninsula by taking the passenger ferry from Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor to avoid driving around the bay.
  • Dedicate at least one full morning to renting an e-bike or gravel bike in Bar Harbor to cycle the motor-free Rockefeller carriage roads around Eagle Lake and over stone bridges.
