The Abel Tasman Coast strips away the brutal, weather-beaten drama typical of New Zealand tramping and replaces it with granite headlands, placid turquoise bays, and native coastal bush. Running 60 kilometers between Marahau in the south and Wainui Bay in the north, the coastline operates on a rhythmic logistical network of open-bow water taxis, sea kayak outfitters, and tidal estuaries. It is New Zealand's easiest Great Walk to customize: you can complete an unsupported four-day trek sleeping in Department of Conservation (DOC) huts, kayak between secluded lagoons, or ride boats deep into the park to walk day sections without carrying heavy packs.

How to plan 10 days in Abel Tasman Coast, South Island, New Zealand

  • Always plan your walking segments around the Awaroa Estuary tide chart before you book huts or water taxi drop-offs.
  • Pair a morning sea kayak from Marahau to Anchorage with an afternoon walk back via Torrent Bay to experience both coast and track in a single day.
  • Do not attempt to walk from Marahau all the way to Wainui in under three days unless you enjoy rushing past the park's best swimming lagoons.
  • Book a one-way water taxi deep into the park (such as Bark Bay or Onetahuti) and walk southbound back toward Marahau for the most flexible day-hike logistics.
  • Combine Abel Tasman with a two-day detour over Tākaka Hill into Golden Bay and Te Waikoropupū Springs instead of heading straight back to Nelson.
