Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off Tanzania — a Swahili-Arab world of a carved-door Stone Town, spice plantations, and some of the Indian Ocean's best beaches.

The split is Stone Town for culture (carved doors, the slave-trade history, the night market) and the east and north coasts for beaches (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje). Combine the two: a couple of days in Stone Town and a beach week on the coast.

It's the perfect end to an East African safari — but it stands alone too. Go in the dry seasons (June–October, December–February); the long rains hit March–May. It's Muslim — dress modestly in Stone Town and villages.

How long

4–7 days

Best time

June–October and December–February

Budget

USD 80–200 per person per day at mid-range. Beach resorts are the premium.

Getting around

Taxis, daladalas (minibuses), and private transfers. Renting a car is uncommon — drivers and tours are the move.

When to go

Dry and pleasant — the best beach weather. The long rains (March–May) are wet and humid; short rains (November) are brief.

Long dry (Jun–Oct)

The best beach weather — dry, breezy, and the clearest water.

Short dry (Dec–Feb)

Hot and dry; great for the beach, with Christmas peak crowds.

Short rains (Nov)

Brief afternoon showers; green and cheaper.

Long rains (Mar–May)

Wet and humid; the low season, with lower prices.

Neighborhoods

Where you stay shapes the trip. Here's how to think about it.

Stone Town

The historic Swahili old town — carved doors, narrow lanes, the slave-trade museum, and the night market.

Best for:Culture, first-timers

Don't miss:The carved doors and the Forodhani night market.

Nungwi & Kendwa (north)

The best sand-and-sunsets beaches — the north doesn't tide out, so you can swim all day.

Best for:Beach, couples

Don't miss:A sunset dhow cruise from Nungwi.

Paje & Jambiani (east)

The kite-surfing and quieter beaches — tide goes out far, so timing matters.

Best for:Beach, kitesurf, budget

Don't miss:Kitesurfing at Paje and a low-tide walk to the lagoon.

Spice plantations (day trip)

The plantations that gave Zanzibar its name — a guided tour of cloves, nutmeg, and vanilla.

Best for:Day trip, culture

Don't miss:A half-day spice tour from Stone Town.

Mnemba Atoll (snorkel trip)

The best snorkeling and a dolphin site — a boat trip from the north.

Best for:Snorkel, day trip

Don't miss:A morning snorkel at Mnemba Atoll.

Money & essentials

Currency

Tanzanian shilling (TZS); USD widely accepted in tourist areas. Carry cash.

Language

Swahili. English common in tourist areas.

Safety

Very safe in tourist areas. The main risks are the sun, the tide, and pickpockets in Stone Town markets.

Budget range

USD 80–200 per person per day at mid-range. Beach resorts are the premium.

Tipping

10% at restaurants; round up for drivers.

How to plan it

  • Split the trip: 2 days Stone Town + a beach stay on the north or east coast.
  • Swim on the north coast — the east tide goes out far, so you can't always swim.
  • Dress modestly in Stone Town and villages; the beaches are more relaxed.
  • End an East African safari here — it's the classic combination.
  • Carry USD cash in small bills for tips, taxis, and markets.
