A 7-day trip to Venice

A carless labyrinth of maritime art, quiet sestieri, and evening cicchetti bars.

Venice is an astonishing 1,500-year-old architectural anomaly built across 118 islands linked by over 400 stone bridges. Stripped of car engines and road asphalt, the city operates strictly via watery canals and tight pedestrian alleys called calli. While midday crowds swarm the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco, the genuine soul of Venice endures in residential sestieri like Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, where laundry hangs overhead, morning markets hum along canal walls, and workers crowd wooden bacari for midday wine and small plates.

How to plan 7 days in Venice

  • Base yourself in Cannaregio or Dorsoduro rather than San Marco to dine where residents actually eat and sleep without alley roar.
  • Do not cram San Marco, the Doge's Palace, and Murano into the same day; allocate mornings to monument lines and afternoons to outer residential sestieri.
  • If visiting the northern lagoon, prioritize quiet Torcello's 7th-century basilica mosaics over the souvenir glass storefronts of Murano.
  • Buy a multi-day ACTV vaporetto travel card at arrival if you plan to explore outer lagoon islands or ride the length of the Grand Canal.
  • Schedule your Rialto Market visit before 10:00 AM Tuesday through Saturday when fishmongers are active and day-trip crowds have not yet arrived.
