A 10-day trip to Tainan, Taiwan
Taiwan's slow-paced culinary capital where breakfast beef soup meets 400 years of layered history.
Tainan is Taiwan’s oldest city and undisputed food capital, serving as the imperial and cultural cradle before political power migrated north to Taipei. Unlike the neon-lit, metro-connected capital, Tainan operates at an unhurried, scooter-dominated rhythm defined by low-rise shophouses, Qing-dynasty alleyways, and deep culinary pride. Travelers come here specifically to eat across generations-old street stalls, wander atmospheric heritage lanes like Shennong Street, and understand the island's Dutch, Ming, and Japanese layers without the frenzy of a corporate megalopolis.

How to plan 10 days in Tainan, Taiwan
- Base yourself in West Central District around You'ai Street or Guohua Street to step directly into morning markets on foot without needing bus transfers.
- Do not count on night markets operating every night; Garden Night Market opens only Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while Dadong Night Market runs Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.
- Plan a food crawl across three to four stalls instead of full meals, targeting distinct specialties like breakfast beef soup, danzai noodles, and savory rice cakes (wa gui).
- Dedicate a separate half-day trip to Anping using a taxi or bus #2, rather than trying to split single afternoons between inland heritage temples and the coastal fort.
- Pair Tainan with Kaohsiung or Chiayi (the springboard for Alishan) via regular TRA express trains, which take under 45 minutes between city centers.
