A 4-day trip to Rwanda Primate Circuit (Volcanoes & Nyungwe)
High-altitude conservation encounters with mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.
Rwanda’s primate circuit is a high-stakes, high-reward eco-tourism experience. It centers on the rare opportunity to trek mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzees in the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe. This is a curated, premium destination where logistics are as critical as the wildlife sightings.
Trip length
4 days
Best time to go
June to September for dry forest trails; mid-December to early February as a close second.
What your 4-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 4 days in Rwanda Primate Circuit (Volcanoes & Nyungwe)
- Anchor your itinerary around your confirmed gorilla permit date first; build transit, lodges, and Nyungwe chimpanzee permits backward and forward from that fixed day.
- Break the 6-to-7-hour mountain transit between Volcanoes and Nyungwe with an overnight on Lake Kivu (Rubavu or Karongi) instead of attempting a grueling single-day transfer.
- Do not book your chimpanzee trek on your arrival day in Nyungwe—briefings start before 5:00 AM at Gisakura or Uwinka, requiring you to be in position the evening before.
- Schedule golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes as a lower-elevation 'warm-up' trek the morning prior to your mountain gorilla trek to acclimatize to high altitude.
- Budget for private vehicle transit from Kigali (2.5 hours to Kinigi, 5.5 hours to Gisakura); public transport does not connect to park trailheads.
