Portugal
A 5-day trip to Porto
Porto is Lisbon's smaller, prettier sibling — port wine, tiled facades, and a river through a gorge.
Porto is walkable, romantic, and cheaper than Lisbon — the Ribeira by the Douro, port lodges across the river, and tiled churches. Eat a francesinha if you dare and walk the bridges.

How to plan 5 days in Porto
- Stay in Clérigos or Baixa if you want to walk downhill to sights and avoid hiking up 200 vertical feet every time you head back to your room.
- Cross the upper deck of Dom Luís I Bridge on foot at dusk for the skyline view of Ribeira, then catch the teleférico or an Uber back if the climb is daunting.
- Book an English-language port lodge cellar tour at least a couple of weeks ahead; walking up unannounced usually means waiting hours or settling for retail-room tastings.
- Combine a morning at Mercado do Bolhão with an afternoon tram ride on Line 1 along the riverbank out to the Atlantic breakers at Foz do Douro.
- Don't try to cram a Douro Valley boat trip and a full Porto sightseeing circuit into the same 48 hours; give the city center two full days on its own.
