Khao Lak

A 5-day trip to Khao Lak

Uncluttered Andaman beaches and raw rainforest gateway without the Phuket clamor

Stretching along a 25-kilometer ribbon of golden coastline an hour north of Phuket, Khao Lak is mainland Thailand's premier antidote to package-tourism frenzy. Where neighboring Phuket leans into neon nightlife and dense high-rises, Khao Lak is defined by strict low-rise building codes, sweeping national parks, quiet surf breaks, and easy departures for the world-class dive waters of the Similan and Surin Islands.

How to plan 5 days in Khao Lak

  • Base yourself in Bang La On or Bang Niang if you want to walk out your resort door directly to evening street food and cafes.
  • Pair Khao Lak with a 2-night jungle raft or tented camp excursion in neighboring Khao Sok National Park, located just 75 minutes inland.
  • Book your Similan or Surin liveaboard or day excursion at least 3 to 6 weeks in advance if traveling during peak December and January.
  • Choose Bang Sak or Pak Weep up north if you want undisturbed, low-density luxury resorts and don't care about walking into village markets.
  • Avoid trying to combine a Similan Islands speedboat trip and an inland waterfall hike into a single day; the early maritime departure and rough seas will sap your energy.
