A 3-day trip to Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)
Dramatic Caucasus peaks, austere stone churches, and high-alpine valley trekking
Perched on the northern flanks of the Greater Caucasus just 11 kilometers south of the Russian frontier, Stepantsminda (widely known as Kazbegi) is the high-altitude centerpiece of the Georgian Military Highway. Guarded by the volcanic pyramid of Mount Kazbek (5,033 meters) and the silhouette of Gergeti Trinity Church, it serves as the ultimate alpine basecamp for hikers, road-trippers escaping Tbilisi, and mountain purists.
Trip length

How to plan 3 days in Kazbegi (Stepantsminda)
- Base yourself in Stepantsminda town center if relying on public marshrutkas and hiker shuttles; stay in Upper Gergeti or Sno Valley only if you have private wheels.
- Do not attempt Juta's Chaukhi Pass and the Truso Valley gorge walk on the same day—they sit on entirely different branching side-roads off the highway.
- Start the hike toward Gergeti Glacier before 7:30 AM to beat midday valley thermals and cloud cover that routinely obscure Mount Kazbek's peak by lunch.
- Reserve Seats with Mountain Freaks or private GoTrip transfers at least 24 hours in advance during July and August to avoid relying on ad-hoc taxi bargaining in the main square.
- Pack a windproof hard shell and thermal layers even in peak July; valley temperatures regularly plunge below 10°C as soon as the sun dips behind the Caucasus ridge.
