A 5-day trip to Kauai, Hawaii
Dramatically untamed ridgelines, quiet beach towns, and a strict no-rush clock.
Kauai, Hawaii's oldest geological island, trades high-rise nightlife and resort sprawl for razor-thin volcanic spires, deep red-rock gorges, and a strictly enforced building height limit lower than a coconut tree. From the jagged sea cliffs of the Nā Pali Coast to the arid expanse of Waimea Canyon, it feels remarkably raw and agrarian, demanding early wake-ups, proper trail footwear, and a willingness to tailor plans around rain patterns.
Trip length
5 days
Best time to go
May to early June or September to October.
What your 5-day plan includes
- A day-by-day itinerary with neighborhoods clustered so you spend less time in transit.
- Real budget awareness — a target, an estimate, and a status you can dial up or down.
- Recommendations shaped by your pace, food priorities, group, and must-dos.
- Swap anything, improve any day, refine in any direction without starting over.
How to plan 5 days in Kauai, Hawaii
- Reserve your Hāʻena State Park entry and parking pass exactly 30 days in advance at midnight HST if you intend to see Keʻe Beach or hike into Hanakāpīʻai.
- Do not attempt Waimea Canyon and the North Shore on the same day; driving from Hanalei to the canyon rim takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way.
- Schedule boat tours along the Nā Pali Coast for early morning from Port Allen or Hanalei to avoid the rough afternoon chop and high winds.
- Book rental cars well ahead of arrival, as vehicle shortages on the island can severely inflate daily rates during peak periods.
- Base yourself in Poʻipū between November and March if you want consistent sunshine and swimmable water while the North Shore receives heavy winter rain.
