A 10-day trip to Kakheti, Georgia

Ancient qvevri wine cellars and walled mountain towns in the cradle of viticulture

Kakheti is Georgia's premier agricultural heartland and viticultural soul, home to continuous clay-vessel winemaking traditions dating back 8,000 years. Stretching across the Alazani River basin backed by the snow-capped Greater Caucasus, the region swaps modern tourist kitsch for deep-rooted culinary heritage, centuries-old stone monasteries, and generous rural hospitality.

How to plan 10 days in Kakheti, Georgia

  • Base yourself in Sighnaghi for evening atmospheric dining on foot, or pick Telavi if you want shorter driving routes to northern monastic sites and family maranis.
  • Do not book self-drive car rentals if you plan on participating in cellar tastings; hire a dedicated car and driver through GoTrip instead.
  • Split Kakheti geographically: dedicate one full day to the southern Sighnaghi and Bodbe circuit, and another day to Telavi, Tsinandali, Gremi, and Nekresi.
  • Take the Gombori Pass route between Tbilisi and Telavi for scenic mountain landscapes, but stick to the highway via Sagarejo in bad winter weather.
  • Reserve Rtveli harvest experiences and boutique accommodations at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance if traveling between mid-September and mid-October.
