A 4-day trip to Huaraz, Peru

The rugged basecamp for South America's most staggering alpine lakes and glacial peaks.

Perched at 3,052 meters in the Callejón de Huaylas valley between the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Negra, Huaraz is Peru’s undisputed high-altitude trekking capital. The city itself is functional and utilitarian—rebuilt largely in concrete following a devastating 1970 earthquake—but its backyard delivers world-class outdoor scenery: jagged 6,000-meter Andean summits, intense turquoise glacial lagoons, and legendary multi-day trekking circuits without the tourist-train crowds of Cusco.

How to plan 4 days in Huaraz, Peru

  • Never attempt Laguna 69 on your first full day; warm up your lungs on Laguna Wilcacocha (3,725 m) in the Cordillera Negra first.
  • Stay in Centenario if you want quiet nights before 4:00 AM trekking pickups, or stay within three blocks of Plaza de Armas if you want walk-out agency bookings and cafes.
  • Pair high-altitude day hikes with an easy day trip to the ancient stone ruins and subterranean labyrinth of Chavín de Huántar.
  • Do not attempt Laguna Parón as an afterthought on a busy travel day; round-trip transport from Huaraz takes roughly 6 to 7 hours of bumpy dirt roads.
  • Withdraw sufficient cash in Peruvian Soles in Huaraz before heading into the mountains, as park control checkpoints and Huayhuash village toll gates do not take cards.
