Guatapé

Colombia

A 3-day trip to Guatapé

A flooded reservoir landscape anchored by a massive monolith and hand-carved bas-reliefs.

Perched 80 kilometers east of Medellín in the green highlands of Antioquia, Guatapé is defined by the massive granite inselberg of Piedra del Peñol and a 2,200-hectare hydroelectric reservoir that flooded the historic valley in the 1970s. The town itself is famed for its zócalos—ornate, brightly painted pictorial bas-reliefs along the skirt of every building telling tales of trades, folklore, and local life. While long treated as a rushed day trip, staying overnight reveals quiet mornings, peaceful water sports, and tranquil lakeside eco-lodges long after the bus tours head back to Medellín.

How to plan 3 days in Guatapé

  • Climb Piedra del Peñol at 8:00 AM sharp to beat both the tropical heat and the bus tours rolling in from Medellín.
  • Stay in Pueblo Centro if you want evening strolls and cafes; book an outlying Embalse eco-lodge if you prioritize silence and kayaking.
  • Never travel back to Medellín on a Sunday evening or a holiday Monday unless you are prepared for a 4-hour crawl on Highway 70.
  • Pair your visit with an extra night down the mountain in San Rafael (1 hour east) if you want natural swimming holes and rainforest tubing.
  • Schedule your zócalo architecture walk before 9:30 AM to capture clear photos of Plazoleta de los Zócalos without selfie sticks.
