A 5-day trip to Delphi

The ancient naval of the world perched dramatically above the Pleistos Valley

Delphi clings to the southwest flank of Mount Parnassus, looking out across an endless expanse of olive groves down to the Gulf of Corinth. Once revered by the ancient Mediterranean as the literal omphalos (navel) of the Earth, it served as the neutral diplomatic heart of classical antiquity where statesmen and kings sought the guidance of the Pythian oracle. Today, the split between the compact modern town and the terraced ancient precinct allows visitors to experience one of classical antiquity's most intact sanctuary complexes within a breathtaking alpine landscape.

How to plan 5 days in Delphi

  • Arrive at the archaeological site ticket gates at 8:00 AM sharp to conquer the steep trail up to the stadium before tour buses arrive at 10:30 AM.
  • Do not visit the museum first: explore the exposed mountain ruins in the morning cool and take refuge in the air-conditioned Delphi Archaeological Museum when midday heat peaks.
  • If driving from Athens, detour 25 minutes off the main highway to visit the 11th-century Byzantine mosaics at the Monastery of Hosios Loukas before ascending Mount Parnassus.
  • Walk the extra 15 minutes east along the road from the main site to explore the Tholos at the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and the Castalian Spring rather than skipping them for lunch.
  • Pair Delphi with Meteora on a multi-day road trip; attempting both as a combined 2-day marathon from Athens requires over 10 hours of transit and leaves little energy for the climbs.
