A 4-day trip to Chania, Crete, Greece

Venetian naval architecture, Cretan culinary heritage, and the launching pad for wild western gorges.

Chania is Crete's atmospheric second city, anchored by a 14th-century Venetian harbor, an Egyptian lighthouse, and a dense tangle of alleyways that survived centuries of Ottoman, Venetian, and Byzantine rule. Unlike resort-heavy northern enclaves, Chania functions as an authentic year-round working city with an elite food scene and rapid access to rugged mountain gorges and remote coastal routes.

How to plan 4 days in Chania, Crete, Greece

  • Base yourself in Topanas or Splantzia for pure pedestrian convenience, but choose Nea Chora or Halepa if you plan to keep a rental car parked overnight.
  • Do not attempt Balos Lagoon and Elafonisi Beach on the same day; they sit on opposing corners of western Crete and driving between them demands slow, winding mountain switchbacks.
  • Pair your stay with Rethymno (1 hour east by car or bus) or southern seaside villages like Sougia and Loutro rather than attempting a cross-island dash to Heraklion.
  • If hiking the Samaria Gorge, book the early 6:15 AM KTEL bus to the Omalos plateau to beat the midday sun and catch the afternoon ferry from Agia Roumeli to Sougia or Chora Sfakion.
